How to Wear Stockings and Suspender Belts

If you have never worn stockings and a suspender belt before, the straps and clips can look rather more complicated than they really are. Once your belt fits correctly and the straps are adjusted, getting dressed takes little longer than putting on tights—and usually involves rather less wrestling.

At What Katie Did, we have been designing, wearing and fitting stockings and suspender belts since 1999. Here is how to put everything on, keep your seams straight and remain comfortably clipped together throughout the day.

How to Wear Stockings and Suspenders: The Short Version

  1. Fasten your suspender belt securely around your natural waist.

  2. Gather each stocking down to the toe and ease it gently over your foot and leg.

  3. If your stockings are seamed, check the seam is straight as you go.

  4. Attach the front clips to the reinforced stocking welt, followed by the back and side clips.

  5. Adjust the straps so they feel supportive without pulling, then sit down and move around to check the fit.

That is the entire mystery. The details below will help you avoid snags, wandering seams and the indignity of a suspender belt slowly heading south.

What Is the Difference Between Stockings and Hold-Ups?

True stockings finish on the thigh and need a suspender belt, girdle or another garment with suspender straps to hold them up. In the US, a suspender belt is usually called a garter belt.

Hold-ups, also known as stay-ups, have silicone grips inside the welt and are designed to stay up without a belt. The word “stockings” is sometimes used loosely for both, so check the product description before buying.

All What Katie Did stockings are designed to be worn with suspenders. If you would like a fuller explanation of the terminology, read our beginner’s guide to stockings, tights and hold-ups.

Before You Put On Your Stockings

Most stockings are made from very fine nylon. The yarn may be strong for its weight, but the finished hosiery is still delicate, particularly at 15 denier.

Remove rings and bracelets which might catch the fabric, and check your fingernails for rough edges. Hosiery gloves are ideal when handling fully fashioned stockings; inexpensive smooth gloves will also do the job, even if they are not quite as glamorous.

It is best to sit down while putting the foot and ankle of the stocking on. Apart from making the process easier, this reduces the chances of an undignified wobble while balancing on one leg.

How to Put On Stockings Without Snagging Them

  1. Gather the stocking before putting your foot in. Hold it by the reinforced welt and carefully gather the fabric down through your hands until you reach the toe. Do not pull it on from the top as though it were a long sock.

  2. Ease your toes into place. Make sure the toe section is sitting comfortably and, if the stocking has a shaped heel, that the heel is correctly positioned.

  3. Pull the stocking over your heel. Once it reaches your ankle, check the back seam. It is much easier to correct the seam here than after you have pulled the stocking all the way up.

  4. Work gradually up the leg. Smooth the stocking upwards a little at a time, checking the seam every few inches. Follow the seam with a fingertip at the back of your leg rather than repeatedly turning around to look.

  5. Check the final position. The welt should sit comfortably on the upper thigh without digging in. Use a full-length mirror for a final seam check.

If the seam has wandered, do not twist the stocking while it is stretched over your leg. Lower it to the point where the seam first moved out of position, correct it and gently work upwards again.

Fully fashioned stockings contain little or no stretch and may look alarmingly long before you put them on. This is normal: your leg takes up the length. Correct sizing matters, however, as a stocking that is too long will wrinkle while one that is too short will pull uncomfortably against the suspenders.

Emergency stocking tip: If a small ladder appears, remove the stocking and place a tiny dot of clear nail varnish at each end of the ladder. This may prevent it spreading, although it will not make the damage disappear.

How Should a Suspender Belt Fit?

A suspender belt intended for practical wear is rather different from a narrow fashion belt designed primarily to look pretty in a photograph.

It should sit securely at the waist

Our suspender belts are designed to sit at the natural waist rather than low on the hips. The waist gives the belt a secure anchor; a loose belt worn lower down can gradually be pulled towards the wider part of the body by the stockings.

It should feel snug, not restrictive

Your belt needs to be secure enough to resist the downward pull of the stockings, but you should still be able to breathe, sit and bend comfortably. If it digs in painfully, the answer is not simply to fasten it more tightly: you may need a different size or a deeper style.

A deeper belt is usually more comfortable

A broader waistband spreads the tension over a larger area. Very narrow belts can dig in when worn tightly enough to do the job properly.

The clips and adjusters matter

Small plastic clips and smooth bra-style adjusters may be adequate for occasional wear, but they can be fiddly and prone to slipping. Our suspender belts use substantial nickel-free metal clips and toothed metal adjusters so the straps remain at the length you choose.

More straps give greater stability

A four-strap belt can hold stockings up, but six straps distribute the tension more evenly and are generally more dependable for all-day wear. Belts with additional straps provide still more security—and a rather more dramatic appearance—but naturally take a little longer to fasten.

How to Attach Stockings to a Suspender Belt

The suspender clip should fasten to the reinforced welt at the top of the stocking, never to the sheer leg.

  1. Open all the clips before you begin. Push the rubber button upwards through the wider opening in the metal clip.

  2. Position the rubber button behind the stocking welt, against your leg, with the metal clip on the outside.

  3. Draw the welt and rubber button through the wider part of the metal opening, then slide the button down into the narrow section until it is secure. Avoid catching excessive fabric in the fastening.

  4. Attach the two front straps first. Allow each strap to hang naturally and clip it to the stocking directly below; placing it too far to either side will pull the welt out of shape.

  5. Attach the back straps next. They do not need to sit directly over a back seam. In fact, the clip is usually better positioned just to the outside of it, in line with the strap.

  6. Attach the side straps last if your belt has six or more suspenders.

  7. Adjust the straps until the tension feels even. They should hold the stockings smoothly without pulling the welt into sharp points.

Once everything is attached, sit down, bend and walk around for a moment. The back straps may need to be slightly longer than the front to allow you to sit comfortably. A belt which feels perfect while standing absolutely still is not much use if you cannot make it as far as the front door.

Should Knickers Go Over or Under a Suspender Belt?

Either is correct, but knickers worn over the suspender belt and straps are far more convenient during the day. You can visit the loo without undoing all your suspenders.

For this arrangement, put on your suspender belt first, followed by your stockings, and then your knickers. If you are dressing for appearance rather than practicality, you may prefer to wear the belt over your knickers.

Common Stocking and Suspender Problems

Why does my suspender belt slide down?

It may be sitting too low, be too loose around the waist or have a very narrow waistband which cannot resist the pull of the stockings. Try wearing it at your natural waist and check the sizing.

Why do my stockings sag?

The suspender straps may be too long, the belt may be slipping, or the stockings themselves may be too long for your legs. Shorten the straps gradually and evenly rather than tightening one strap dramatically.

Why does the stocking welt pull into points?

The clips may be positioned too far apart or the straps may be too tight. Allow the straps to hang vertically and reduce the tension slightly.

Why won’t my seams remain straight?

Make sure the seam is properly aligned from the ankle upwards before attaching the clips. Uneven strap lengths can also pull the stocking around during wear.

Why does a suspender clip keep opening?

Check that it is attached to the reinforced welt rather than the sheer leg, that the rubber button is fully seated in the narrow part of the clip and that you have not trapped too much fabric in it.

Can You Wear Hold-Ups With a Suspender Belt?

You can sometimes attach suspenders to hold-ups, but it is rarely the best combination. The silicone welt is thicker, making clips difficult to fasten and potentially placing unnecessary strain on both the clip and the stocking.

For the most secure and comfortable result, choose stockings with a reinforced welt specifically designed for suspender clips.

Can You Wear Stockings and Suspenders All Day?

Yes. A well-fitting suspender belt with secure clips and correctly adjusted straps should remain comfortable throughout an ordinary day. If everything continually needs adjusting, the problem is more likely to be the belt’s fit, hardware or strap length than stockings themselves.

Once you find a comfortable strap setting for a particular style and size of stocking, you should not need to change it every time. Different brands and stocking lengths may require small adjustments.
