The Secret of a 1950s Silhouette

There is no mistaking the shape created by a bullet bra. While most modern bras lift the bust upwards and towards the centre, creating a rounded outline, a 1950s bullet bra projects the bust forwards. This distinctive shape became famous beneath the fitted sweaters, tailored dresses and narrow waists of the decade, earning its lasting association with Hollywood’s glamorous “sweater girls.”

It was never simply a fashion eccentricity. Clothing in the 1950s was designed to sit over the structured lingerie of the period, with bust darts and fitted bodices cut for a more projected profile. This is why an original vintage dress, or a faithfully made reproduction, can sometimes appear rather flat or fit strangely over a modern rounded bra.

Change the bra and the difference can be surprisingly dramatic. The bust darts sit where the dressmaker intended, the bodice regains its proper line and the extra definition above the waist can make the waist itself appear narrower. Sometimes the dress doesn’t need altering; it simply needs the lingerie it was designed to be worn with.

Padded or Unpadded Bullet Bra?

We make both padded and unpadded bullet bras, with each style available in classic black and vintage peach. Neither is the “correct” choice: it depends on your natural bust shape and how pronounced you would like the finished silhouette to be.

Our Padded Bullet Bra was developed particularly for smaller busts. Traditional unpadded cone bras rely on the wearer’s bust to fill the very tip of the cup, which can be difficult for smaller or shallower breasts. Light padding holds the point in place, creating a defined and reliably dramatic shape beneath clothing. It is also a wonderful option for anyone who prefers a sharper, more sculpted silhouette.

Our unpadded Maitresse and Harlow Bullet Bras work much like their original 1950s counterparts. Concentric rows of stitching give the satin cups their structure, while your own bust fills the cup and creates the finished point. As a result, the precise silhouette varies naturally from one wearer to another, giving a slightly softer interpretation of the classic sweater-girl shape.

Wire-Free 1950s Lingerie

All our bullet bras are wire-free. Their shape comes from the carefully constructed cups, firm band and spiral stitching rather than underwires or heavily moulded modern cups.

The bands have deliberately limited stretch, in keeping with the vintage bras that inspired them, so your What Katie Did size may differ from the size you wear in contemporary lingerie. Please check the measurements provided for your chosen style rather than relying automatically on your usual bra size.

Once the bra is on, adjust the shoulder straps and take the time to swoop and scoop your bust fully into the cups. With a bullet bra, a little careful adjustment can make a considerable difference to both the fit and the finished point.
