There is a great deal to admire about a Merry Widow. It combines bust support, waist shaping, torso smoothing and suspenders in one beautifully engineered garment. Under a 1950s dress, particularly one with a strapless or off-the-shoulder neckline, it can do the work of several separate pieces while maintaining one smooth line.
There is also one unavoidable difficulty: a Merry Widow has to support the bust without relying on shoulder straps.
It must still accommodate the waist and torso correctly, but cup size is the particular limitation in our current range. A regular bra can use its shoulder straps as part of its support system. With a strapless Merry Widow, the cups, band and body of the garment must provide all the lift and security themselves. The larger the cup, the more specialised that engineering becomes.
We would much rather explain that honestly, and offer a useful alternative, than pretend that sister sizing can create a larger cup size where one does not exist.
What Is the Difference Between a Merry Widow and a Waist Cincher?
Our Glamour Merry Widow extends from the bust to the upper hip. Its structured cups support and shape the breasts, while powermesh, spiral steel boning and an internal elastic waist tape define the waist and smooth the torso. Its shoulder straps and six metal suspender clips are detachable, allowing it to be worn as a strapless foundation and with or without stockings.
The Glamour Waist Cincher begins beneath the bust and also finishes around the upper hip. It concentrates on the midsection rather than trying to fit and support the breasts. Steel boning keeps it upright, while the powermesh, satin tummy panel and internal waist tape create a firm, defined 1950s line. It also has six detachable suspenders.

Why Does the Merry Widow Have a Smaller Cup-Size Range?
Bras are already among the most technically demanding garments to make, and strapless bras are more specialised again. Increasing the cup is not simply a matter of adding a little more fabric. The wire, cup depth, cradle, band and distribution of support all have to be reconsidered so that the garment can lift and remain securely in place without help from shoulder straps.
Developing reliable strapless support for larger cups is a specialist discipline in its own right, and it is not expertise we currently have in-house. Doing it properly would require specialist technical development, new patterns and components, followed by extensive fitting and testing across the proposed sizes. That process is extremely expensive before a single production garment is made.
What Katie Did is a tiny brand with a niche customer base, and we do not have the development budgets or production volumes of a large specialist bra company. We know the absence of larger cups is frustrating, but we would not put our name on a scaled-up version that had not been engineered to provide the support a strapless garment needs.
Sometimes sister sizing can help someone find a better fit within the cup volumes we already make. Because the garment shapes the whole torso, you still need to consider your waist size as well as the number printed on your usual bra label. Measurements can be found in the product description, and our team is always happy to assist before you order. Sister sizing has sensible limits, however, and it cannot replace a genuinely larger cup.

Recreating the Merry Widow Look With Your Own Bra
If the Merry Widow does not come in a workable size, begin with the bra rather than the shapewear. Choose a black satin bra that fits properly, gives the bust shape you prefer and works beneath the neckline of your clothes. It does not have to be one of ours.
Add the black Glamour Waist Cincher beneath it. The cincher rises to the underbust and has been designed to meet the back of a bra, avoiding an unshaped gap through the middle. The black satin panels visually connect the two pieces, while the cincher provides the defined waist and smooth torso associated with the Merry Widow.
This is particularly useful if you need a fuller cup, a smaller or larger band, a different wire shape, or simply know that another brandβs bra fits you beautifully. It also allows you to change the style of the bust without buying another piece of shapewear. A rounded satin bra creates a softer modern-vintage line; a cone or bullet bra gives a more emphatically mid-century silhouette.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose the Merry Widow if your bust and waist measurements correspond well with the garment, you want one foundation piece instead of several, or you need integrated support beneath a strapless or off-the-shoulder dress. It is also wonderfully convenient when you want bra, waist shaping and suspenders to behave as one rather glamorous unit.
Choose the Waist Cincher with your own bra if your Merry Widow size is unavailable, your bust and waist fall into different proportions, you are particular about cup or wire shape, or you want to vary the bra while keeping the same waist foundation. The separate pieces also make it easier to replace one part of the arrangement without replacing everything.
Neither is the lesser option. The Merry Widow is elegant because everything is integrated. The Waist Cincher is clever because it is not. One asks a single garment to fit your whole torso; the other lets you build the silhouette around the bra that already fits you.
For a tiny lingerie company, admitting that larger-cup strapless engineering is beyond our present expertise and resources is not the most dazzling conclusion to a story about satin foundations. It is, however, the truth. Happily, good foundation dressing has always been partly about ingenuityβand a beautifully fitting bra with a properly constructed waist cincher remains an excellent piece of it.
