As What Katie Did has grown we've finally been able to commission some fully fashioned stockings exclusive to us - or should I say 'me', as I'm the one who's always wanted nude fully fashioned stockings with a red seam. This colour combination is manufactured exclusively for us, so you'll only find them in our London boutique and on our website.

I was extremely excited about producing a navy contrast seamed fully fashioned stockings, but when the sample came through the seam just looked black! We've now made the stocking with a lighter 'French blue' which when viewed through the stocking looks darker but is noticably blue. They're ideal to wear with our new Sailor lingerie.

There are only two factories in the UK that still make fully fashioned stockings. The machinery is extremely big, slow, heavy and tempermental which means that the remaining companies are making fully fashioned stockings for the love of them, certainly not for the money!
Several heel types were available in the past, with Cuban and Point (or French) being the most popular. There's no particular meaning to each heel type although Cubans were certainly more common in the 1940s and early 1950s than points.

Lily is our first Gold Label lingerie range, and it was created after Katie happened across a supply of luxurious, limited edition lace on a buying trip to Paris. The Lily bra is an authentic, 1950s style underwired bra, made from the beautiful black, floral lace, which is layered over a delicate, peach organza. Its balconette style doesn't compress and restrict like a modern push-up, rather, it supports and separates the breasts for an enhanced natural shape. The exquisite detailing on the lace, coupled with the soft peach ribbon trim on the cups, make this bra a real show-stopper!
Fate obviously had a hand in creating Lily, because only after perfecting the first samples, did Katie unearth an original, late 40s bra made from an uncannily similar floral lace, from her own collection! You can see the vintage one by clicking on the last thumbnail.

2010 Calendar

Our first calendar for 2008 was immensely successful. So successful that we decided not to do one for 2009, and do playing cards instead. If I had a pound for everyone who asked for a 2009 calendar!
We promised we'd publish one for 2010 and here it is: it may not be bigger but it is most definitely better! The calendar features photography by Tony Nylons (who is responsible for all the photography - excepting Bernie Dexter - on this site) and includes a variety of vehicles to keep the boys happy if a scantily clad pin up girl should not be enough.
The layout this year has been done by Charlotte Thomson who's vintage style and illustrations make it look extra special.

15 denier fully fashioned stockings with a classic Point (sometimes known as French) heel. Point and Cuban were the two main heel types in the heyday of fully fashioned nylons, with point heels becoming very popular in the 1950s. Which type you choose is entirely down to personal preference.
Fully fashioned stockings get their name from the fact that they are 'fully fashioned' and are shaped to fit the leg perfectly. The picot lines either side of the seam on the calf show where the nylon stitches are gradually decreased towards the ankle.

Less common than Cuban and Point heels, Havana heeled fully fashioned stockings were made in the 1940s and 1950s. The Havana heel is slightly wider and lower than its sister version: the Cuban. The reinforcement under the foot is cut away to the minimum making the heel and foot detailing subtle yet alluring.
The seam in fully fashioned nylons is an essential part of of the stocking as the seam actually holds the stocking together, unlike modern seamed nylons where the seam is purely decorative.

Fancy outline heels have always been produced for evening wear although they were, and are, rarer than other heel types. If you're into period dressing you certainly wouldn't wear these stockings to do your daily shop, but hopefully you've got a fabulous little cocktail dress that will do them justice.
The fancy heel is reminiscent of Empire State Building, hence the name 'Manhattan'.

For those of you who like to stand out in a crowd these stockings scream glamour. The same silky smooth 15 denier non stretch nylon as our other fully fashioned stockings: these feature a contrasting black foot, seam and welt on nude hose.
Are these an unaffordable luxury? I think not - the fact that they have a nude leg means that they don't show tiny snags like black stockings so are more economical to wear (or that's what I tell myself anyway!)
