Comparing Waspie, Waist Cinchers and Corsets

What is the difference between Waspies, Waist Cinchers and Corsets? We photograph them side by side, on Miss Sugar Rush, on the same afternoon using the same lighting so you can see the difference.

If you're new to retro style hosiery, or hosiery of any kind, then the terminology can be confusing - but help is at hand!

Check out our guide to hosiery and all will be revealed.

The Waspie Waist Cincher

It’s time for you to get acquainted with our Glamour Nouveau Waspie. This nifty little waspie is constantly in our top three most popular lingerie pieces and usually just pips our Glamour Nouveau Waist Cincher to the post.

The short length of this waspie makes it easy to wear and suitable for just about every length of torso. The seam at the waist includes a hidden elastic tape to give extra definition to your waist (a trick we incorporate on all of our waist cinching pieces). Most of the garment is made from a high quality powermesh which molds to fit you perfectly and we’ve placed the hook and eye fastening at the front to make it easy to get into. The lightest spiral steel boning is used to stop your waspie rolling down.

Is anything missing? This waspie does not include suspenders and does not have loops to attach suspenders too, so you will have to wear it with a separate suspender belt if you want to wear stockings.

What do you say?

It does what it said it would do. It accentuates the waist, fits beautifully and is comfortable to wear. I am delighted with the quality of the product and will definitely be buying another one’. - Denise S

The Waist Cincher

Next we have our Glamour Nouveau Waist Cincher: the big sister of our Glamour Nouveau Waspie. Like most sisters they have the odd quarrel, in this case it’s of who is most popular, and I’m sorry to say that the Waist Cincher is the one which often comes second. This longer length cincher is designed to overlap the band of your bra strap slightly eliminating any back fat and giving a very smooth line from bust to hip. Just like it’s little sister, it has a hidden elastic waist tape and a second layer of powermesh to shape. A heavier spiral steel-boning is used in our Glamour Nouveau Cincher as it is a bigger garment, and we’ve added 6 detachable suspenders so you can wear with or without stockings.

What do you say?

‘Not only is the waist cincher I bought a quality item which is true to size and gives me a waist which I didn't have before, but the customer services team went out of their way to get me a currently out of stock item in time for my 50th birthday. I couldn't be happier with my purchase’. - Pamel G

Although Pamel says that our Cincher is true to size, a lot of the other reviews recommend sizing down. When you measure yourself for shapewear you need to measure quite firmly to get an accurate measurement as you will be wearing the garment tightly.

The Demi Waspie Corset

Third up, we have our Demi Waspie Corset. Do you see the pattern yet? That’s right, we’re started with the lightest control and working our way up. Our Demi Waspie Corset features the traditional back lacing of a corset, but the powermesh materials used in our Waspie and Waist Cincher. However, we have used a double layer of powermesh with this garment to make it more heavy duty. This is a pretty unique garment, so please take a look at our video about it to find out about why we’ve made it and sized it the way we have.

What do you say?

‘After trying dozens of different shape wear products, this has been the absolute best. Because it's something between a corset and cincher, it's comfortable while still pulling you in, giving you nice smooth lines, and a wonderful (but not deeply exaggerated) waist’. A (we have no reviews of our Demi Waspie Corset on our UK site so have taken this one from our US website).

Our Glamour Waspie, Waist Cincher and Demi Waspie are all made in our main lingerie factory in India. They incorporate the same peach and black satin and powermesh so you can mix and match with pieces from our other ranges, in particular Glamour, Harlow, Maitresse and Retro, for a perfect colour match.

The Extreme Vamp Corset

Last but certainly not least, we have our Vamp Extreme Corset. Our corsets are made in the traditional way, sized by reduced waist size as opposed to dress size and are completely non stretch. A traditional corset will give you the most dramatic curves, but it’s not a case of looking at a picture and deciding you like that style: you need to find the one closest to your own measurements for the best fit. If you’re new to corsets (and even if you’re not!) please check out our ‘All About Corsets’ page which tells you everything you need to know.

What do you say?

‘This corset is well-made, gives epic cinch to the waist, and looks lovely under clothes as a foundation piece. It crafts a perfect curvaceous vintage silhouette. I've worn many corsets, and never have I been able to cinch so small so easily before. Highly recommended.’ Juno (we have no reviews of our Vamp Extreme Corset on our UK site so have taken this one from our US website).
