There are some occasions in a lady's life when only the best will do. Weddings, proms, anniversaries and once-in-a-lifetime parties – these are the occasions when it’s nice to really push the boat out. For this ultimately luxe look, we’re taking inspiration from the style and detail of the couture designers for the 1950s, styling this beautiful demi-couture dress with the ideal underpinnings to keep you dancing all night long.
To start, we’re creating a strapless cinching base with our Glamour Nouveau Merry Widow. We can’t get enough of this piece which is available in Vintage Peach and Black colourways to match all our other continuity styles. Not only does it come with a built-in waist tape for an amazing cinch, six suspender straps and a clever front fastening (so much easier to get in and out of!) but it is the most comfortable and supportive piece of shapewear about for all-night dancing!
As you can see, the waist tape of this Merry Widow really does its job! Unlike modern versions, even in our shapewear (lighter weight than a corset) we still make sure that vintage hourglass shape is there, so you don’t just look like a tube! Team with our Harlow or Maitresse Deep Knickers to continue smoothing out all your lines into soft curves.
We’ve topped off this ensemble with our Red Glamour Seamed Stockings. Although for an ultra-luxe look you could opt for our 100% Nylon Fully Fashioned Stockings, with their wide welts, our Glamour Seams will keep your super comfortable all night long.
Now for the dress! We chose this beautiful “Roses Souffle” dress by Chotronette for a number of reasons. Firstly, because for a very special occasion, we wanted to use as close to couture dress as feasible. Real couture can cost will into the tens of thousands, but Chotronette (who ship worldwide) will make all their designs made to measure to ensure the perfect fit, which is ideal if you’re investing in a luxurious piece which you want to last you a lifetime.
The detail on this dress is utterly stunning. With much of the embroidery hand-stitched upon a body of lace and tulle with a satin lining, the first thing you realise is how heavy the piece is compared to normal high-street pieces!
The bodice is fully lined with several layers of support in the bust, sheer lace sleeves and layers and layers of tulle in the skirt, so you don’t have to wear a separate petticoat. The skirt itself has been constructed to hang perfectly in a Fifties style shape, without any bunching at the waist. A discreet back zipper means you can step in and out of your Chotronette creation with ease!
We rather loved the red accents on this dress so we made the most of them with a Pinup Girl Clothing bag, a Cath Kidston necklace, a pair of our Long Red Satin Gloves and bright red vintage stiletto shoes to complete the look. However, with such incredible embroidery on this dress, could also just team with plain black heels and let it speak for itself!
