Octavio Arizala is known in the business as the coolest rock'n'roll
pinup-shooter galore. He's got a new book out, and his website Winky
Tiki has become legendary for the man's quirky sense of humor, his
blatant honesty and last but not least his flamboyant and sexy
photographs of - yep, you guessed it - girls!
In
this interview Octavio talks to reporter Elsie Spanner and What
Katie Did about his art, what it's like wading in beautiful girls
for a living and his new book "Modern Vixens" that is out this fall.
When
did you discover photography and decide that this was the thing for
you to do? As
a kid, one of my favourite pastimes was browsing over my dad's large
collection of 60's "bachelor pad" records, those images just
fascinated me, specially the sexy girlies in cool outfits, I was
barely 8, but man! By then I sure knew many ways to use whipped
cream! I took some photo lessons in high school but my teacher
flunked me. In 2000, I dug out the old Pentax and thought I'd give
it another chance, specially being in LA, there are girls everywhere
that want their photos taken. Now I do this full time…
The guy's style is uncanny - at first glance it may look easy to
shoot a beautiful model against a Polynesia-styled background. But
anyone who have ever tried to recreate the innocence and sauciness
of a retro pinup photograph knows how hard it is to get it just
right, it demands great skill and a sharp eye for detail. Octavio's
become famous for his stylistic genius but also for his no bullshit
attitude - not unlike that of another great girlie-shooter - the
late mister Helmut Newton. In a field where big egos flourish and
divas are a dime a dozen this is extremely refreshing and makes him
even greater.
Your photos look very styled and well planned - how do you plan a
new shoot? Do you start with an idea and try and shoot as closely to
that as you can or do you work more on impulse once the set is
built? Yeah, a little bit of planning goes into my shoots. I
start with these impossible epic concepts then as I put it together
things start changing specially coz I spent all my shoot budget at
the bar the night before. So I just let things fall into place once
the lights go on.
